Populations change for a whole host of reasons. People are born, die, move and some just disappear — kind of.

The census data released Thursday gives a closer look at all of those reasons for population change by county, which you can explore using the graphic below, which shows components of population change for the whole state.

Click a county in the map on the right to see how much and why census demographers think populations changed in each area, from 2011 to 2015.

The view above was one look to help try and understand the data, but lost out to a view I think makes the statewide picture a little clearer (by not involving maps, of all things — aren’t maps great though?).

The statewide takeaway is that only two Maine counties had fewer deaths than births last year, continuing a trend seen in estimates since the 2010 census.
